Misbah wants Pakistan to forget batting collapse

The skipper said Friday's second game in Dubai was alltogether a different prospect.

DUBAI (AFP) - A disgruntled Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq Thursday urged his team to move on after gifting a one-run win to South Africa and called on his batsmen to rectify their mistakes.
Pakistan snatched the proverbial "defeat from the jaws of a win" in the first of five one-day internationals in Sharjah on Wednesday.
Chasing a modest 184-run target, Pakistan were in sight of victory at 165-4 in the 41st over, but lost their last six wickets off just 39 balls in the space of 17 runs.
But Misbah said Friday's second game in Dubai was alltogether a different prospect.
"If we keep recalling about what happened in the last match it will be difficult. We must forget that and all our players should play the next match as a new game," said Misbah.
For South Africa Wayne Parnell shone with both bat and ball, hitting a career best 56 in South Africa's 183 all out in 49.5 overs before taking 3-41 in his eight overs. He was deservedly declared man-of-the-match.
Misbah said he was disappointed at his batsmen's failures.
"The last six batsmen should have batted, knowing how many runs were needed to score. It is very disappointing that they played very irresponsible shots," he said
"I think it is high time players understand how to play under such situations," added Misbah, whose dismissal for 31 in the 36th over proved to be the turning point.
Ahmed Shehzad set the tone with a confident 58 but once he and Misbah fell, Pakistan's batting collapsed.
Umar Akmal (18), Umar Amin (20) and Shahid Afridi (nine) fell in the space of 11 runs before Morne Morkel bowled Mohammad Irfan to seal an unlikely win for South Africa.
"I think we could say that my dismissal and then those of Amin and Umar were crucial and after that Afridi was left alone and we wanted him to stay there till the end," said Misbah.
Misbah urged his batsmen to learn from Parnell and Lonwabo Tsotsobe (16 not out) who added an invaluable 52 runs for South Africa's ninth wicket.
"Our batsmen should also rise to the challenge in such situations," said Misbah.
"We just needed two runs an over and one and half runs per over and I don't know what was going through the batsmen's mind, maybe, they over-relaxed a little bit."
South African captain AB de Villiers said his team never lost hope.
"South Africans always believe we can turn things around. When you get a sniff you have drive it home," said De Villiers, who praised leg-spinner Imran tahir for his return of 3-45.
"Immi (Tahir) was fantastic. Have to also give credit to Tsotsobe for his two wickets. Immi followed him and did his magic."
The remaining matches will be played in Abu Dhabi (November 6 and 8) and Sharjah (November 11).
The eams will also play two Twenty20 internationals in Dubai on November 13 and 15.

Dialogue with Taliban underway: Nawaz

Says govt cannot just wait and watch innocent civilians and member of security forces being killed.

LONDON (Dunya News) - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that dialogues with the Taliban have started, adding that the government could not wait and watch the innocent people and members of law enforcement agencies being killed in the streets of Pakistan.
He expressed these views while talking to British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Thursday.
The two discussed Talks with Taliban, relations with India, energy situation and economic reforms agenda.
During a discussion on various issues of mutual interest in a meeting between both the dignitaries, Nawaz Sharif said that talks with the Taliban had already started.
The PM said the dialogue with Taliban would be done within the framework of Constitution of Pakistan. He stated that the government could not see the innocent people and members of law enforcement agencies being killed in the streets of Pakistan.
Nawaz said the government was making its counter-terrorism forces and intelligence agencies fully capable to root out extremism and terrorism from Pakistan.
The enhancement of the capacity of the counter-terrorism forces was a part of different options to deal with extremism and terrorism, he said.
The PM also briefed Mr Clegg on the recently promulgated Protection of Pakistan Ordinance and said that it was specifically prepared to deal with those terrorists who were waging war against the people and the state of Pakistan.
On Pakistan-India relations, the Prime Minister said that he had made sincere efforts to resolve all outstanding issues with India.
“We have made India bashing a non-issue in Pakistan but unfortunately Indian politicians are still engaged in unwarranted Pakistan bashing”, he said.
On reduction of energy subsidy, the PM said that some segments of society were not happy at partial withdrawal of subsidy on electricity but the direction of the present government was correct.
During the next 3-4 years, new energy projects would start generating several thousand megawatts of electricity which would significantly reduce the demand-supply gap as well as the prices of energy.
British Deputy Prime Minister Mr Clegg told Prime Minister Sharif that he and his government was full of admiration for his pro-active approach of reaching out to India before and after elections. He assured that the UK would fully support Pakistan’s case for GSP Plus in the EU market.
Mr Clegg also appreciated recently introduced economic reforms agenda by the Pakistan government.
The Prime Minister appreciated UK’s support in various sectors especially education in Pakistan. Both the sides agreed to further solidify bilateral relations.

She expressed her views Tuesday at an event organised at a radio station here.

"I know what my focus is, where I have to go and I will just keep working towards that," said Pooja who was seen in the female lead in "Commando".

If she ever falls in love she will not hide it.

Anything Salman does will help us: Aamir

Anything Salman does will help us: Aamir
Thursday, October 31, 2013 12:19 IST
Actor Aamir Khan enjoys a good relationship with his colleague and contemporary Salman Khan and said that latter's actions will always be beneficial for him.

Salman is planning to launch "Jai Ho" trailer somewhere close to the release of Aamir's "Dhoom 3", which is schedule to come out Dec 20.

Asked if this would affect his "Dhoom 3", Aamir said: "Salman is a dear friend and anything he does will only help us."

His last film "Talaash" didn't do well at the box office, but his "Ghajini" and "3 Idiots" were blockbusters.

Asked about his expectations from "Dhoom 3", a Yash Raj Films' venture, he said: "I am not looking at setting any records. What really is important for me is that the audience should like the film. It should be entertaining and satisfying for the audience. I don't get into box office figures."

Known as the marketing guru, he didn't reveal anything promotional plans for the film and said: "There is no strategy as such. Let's see."

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, "Dhoom 3" also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Uday Chopra.

'Dhoom 3' my toughest role so far

Aamir Khan, who has played a variety of roles in his 25-year-old career, says "Dhoom 3" is his toughest role so far.

In the last couple of years, the 48-year-old star gave hits in the form of "Taare Zameen Par", "Ghajini" and "3 Idiots" and his role in each of them was as different as chalk to cheese.

But he said: "I think 'Dhoom 3' is my toughest role so far. I have never played anything like this before."

"Every film is challenging, but this was a tough role. I had a great time working in the film," Aamir told reporters Wednesday at the trailer launch of the film.

In terms of preparation, the actor had to workout a lot for "Dhoom 3".

"I am playing a gymnast in the film. I also went for circus training for the film. There was a lot of hard work for the film. I followed a strict diet."

The actor plays a negative role in director Vijay Krishna Acharya's sleek and stylish thriller -- but says not to compare it with the typical villain of the big screen.

"I liked the story and I was amazed after reading the script. I am not playing a typical Hindi cinema villain in 'Dhoom 3'. I don't want people to feel I am playing a villain," said Aamir.

Abhishek Bachchan, his co-star in the film, was also present at the event.

"'Dhoom 3' is much more edgier. I wouldn't call Aamir villain of the film," said Abhishek who featured in the earlier two parts of "Dhoom" that started in 2004.

Also featuring Katrina Kaif and Uday Chopra, the film will come out Dec 20.

FATA tribunal seeks case record of Shakil Afridi

Last Updated On 31 October,2013 About 2 hours ago
The position of FCR commissioner remains vacant after the death of Sahibzada Anis.

PESHAWAR (Dunya News) - The FATA Tribunal has sought the complete record for the case of Dr Shakil Afridi from the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) commissioner and Khyber Agency political agent (PA).
FATA Tribunal Chairman Shah Wali and Fida Muhammad asked for the record on Wednesday, while hearing a revision petition filed by defence lawyers Abdul Latif Afridi, Samiullah Afridi and Qamar Nadeem on October 21. The date for the next hearing has been set for November 5.
Though the case records have been sought, the position of FCR commissioner remains vacant after the death of Sahibzada Anis on October 29. Anis was the Peshawar commissioner who also served as the FCR commissioner.
Talking to reporters, Samiullah said they had filed a revision petition with the tribunal seeking a retrial, new jirga members, who should be chosen with the consent of the petitioner with the right to cross examine, and the passage of a “fair, justifiable and well-reasoned order”.
Shakil’s lawyers have also filed an application to lift the ban on bail. According to Samiullah, his client – like every citizen – has the right to apply for bail and the verdict in the case would take time. The retrial needs to be held inside Peshawar Central Prison where Shakil is incarcerated, instead of the PA House, for the sake of security, emphasised Samiullah.
Under the law, it is the right of each and every accused to defend himself through counsel(s) and cross examining of witness(es), reads the revision petition. But in the present case, both, opportunity for defence and the right to cross examination, were denied to Samiullah’s client, the petitioner, it added. Therefore, the case was remanded back to the PA.
“The FCR Commissioner ordered the petitioner will not be released on bail till the conclusion of the case – this part of the order is against the law. Therefore, this part of the order needs to be declared of no legal effect. Under the law, every accused has a right to apply for bail,” the petition goes on to state.
As the case has been handed to the PA to hear it as a sessions judge, he is bound by law to make a fresh order of reference and refer the case to a new jirga with the consent of the petitioner. The trial court must summon jirga members as well as witnesses in the presence of Dr Shakil, the petitioner; and then after codal formalities, the trial court must pass a reasonable order. These are the stipulations argued by the revision petition.
On August 29, late FCR commissioner Sahibzada Muhammad Anis overturned the 33-year sentence and the Rs320,000 fine imposed by the assistant political agent of Bara.
Dr Shakil Afridi, a former agency surgeon, was arrested on May 23, 2011 for allegedly assisting the US government in tracking down Osama bin Laden. He was later sentenced for having ties with Lashkar-e-Islam under Pakistan Penal Code clauses related to offences against the state, conspiracy or attempt to wage war against the state, spying and allying with a foreign government against the state’s interests.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the case of Dr Shakil is sub judice and would be decided according to the law, following the US government’s request to release him.

Supreme court orders DG ANF to rid Karachi of narcotics trade in one week

CJ orders DG ANF to rid Karachi of narcotics trade in one week KARACHI: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Wednesday directed Director General, Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) to eliminate narcotics’ trade from Karachi within a week.
A three-judge bench of the SC was hearing the Karachi law and order implementation case today at its Karachi Registry.
During the proceedings, the Chief Justice expressed his displeasure over the performance of Maritime Security Agency (MSA), Coast Guards and Customs, and said that arms, drugs and other items were being smuggled into the country despite the presence of these agencies that displays their inability to control the crime.
The CJ questioned the DG ANF Maj Gen Zafar whether or not narcotics’ trade is being carried out in Karachi. The DG ANF responded in the affirmative but said, ‘please, give me a chance to speak”.
The CJ told DG ANF to submit an undertaking in writing that narcotics’ trade will no longer be carried out in Karachi. “The nation, with whose taxes you draw your salaries and perks, wants a guarantee,” he added, directing him to rid the city of narcotics’ trade within a week.
He said big smugglers are residing in posh areas of the metropolis while Lyari is also home to a large number of smugglers.
“The entire country appears to be infested with arms and smuggling while all the concerned authorities seem to be looking on as silent spectators,”
He said Balochistan and Karachi face common problems. “We are sitting on the eruption point of a volcano,” he warned.
CJ Chaudhry further said that if all the agencies and the institutions act as one unit, it would make it impossible even for a single bullet to enter Karachi.
Justice Jawwad S Khawaja remarked that the agencies should realize their responsibilities instead of catching the Indian fishermen only. He further said that whatever is happening in the country today reflects sheer indifference towards the city and its citizens.

US drone strike kills three in Miranshah

Last Updated On 31 October,2013 About 2 hours ago
At least three people were killed when US unmanned aircraft fired missiles at a house in Miranshah.

MIRANSHAH (Dunya News) - A US drone strike targeting a compound in Zafar Town area of Miranshah on Thursday killed three people.
The attack took place near Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal district bordering Afghanistan.
"A US drone fired two missiles on a compound, hitting a part of the house and also a vehicle parked there, killing three people.
Fire engulfed the vehicle soon after the attack, while local people were trying to recover the dead bodies and injured trapped beneath the rubble of the compound.
The incident comes a week after Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif urged US President Barack Obama to stop drone strikes during a meeting in Washington.
The Pakistani defence ministry Wednesday said 317 US drone strikes in the country s tribal areas had killed 67 civilians and 2,160 militants in Pakistan since 2008.
US drone attacks are deeply unpopular in Pakistan, but Washington sees them as a vital tool in the fight against militants in the lawless tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan.
The Pakistani government has repeatedly protested against drone strikes as a violation of its sovereignty.
But privately officials have been reported as saying the attacks can be useful in removing militants from the country.

PTI rejects defamation notice to Imran by a media group

Last Updated On 30 October,2013 About 13 hours ago
Shireen Mazari says Imran demanded probe into allegations without naming any media group.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Central Information Secretary Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Shireen Mazari has said that Chairman PTI Imran Khan is firm on his every word what he said in his interview for a private TV channel.
Talking to Dunya News, she said PTI's central office received a fax copy of a defamation legal notice against party Chairman Imran Khan on October 29.
The notice was sent against his interview that was aired by a private TV channel on October 28.
Shireen Mazari said that the legal notice had been sent on behalf of the registered companies that own certain media Groups.
She said the notice had demanded of the PTI chairman that he should stop the broadcast of his interview of 28th October on channel as the language and the conclusive tone that Imran Khan allegedly used in the interview was highly defamatory and unacceptable.
Mazari said that Imran Khan categorically stated in his interview that any allegations regarding any media house relating to money coming from abroad and allegedly creating links with foreign intelligence agencies must be properly investigated.
The PTI chief reiterated that regardless of which media house was alleged to be involved in any such activity an investigation was in order, she added.
Mazari said that the legal notice seems to reflect a guilty mindset where muzzle of free speech is being asserted, while there is clear character assassination of the TV anchor who conducted the interview.
She said that Imran Khan did not take the name of any media house when demanding an inquiry, the defamatory note itself can be subject to a defamatory legal notice to the media house sending it.
As Parliamentary leader of the second largest political party in the country, Imran Khan has every right to seek an explanation of how contracts and bids are decided by the government, she added.
She pointed out that the PTI chief had shown an exceptional level of tolerance to criticism and personalized attacks against him by a certain media group.
But, despite all this, PTI has chosen not to take legal action against that particular media group so far. Those who demand freedom of expression/speech for themselves clearly cannot stomach it for others.
Meanwhile, Mazari stated categorically that Imran Khan stands by all his comments in the interview and PTI stands firmly behind its chairman and the position he has taken.

Pakistan: 3 percent of drone deaths were civilians

Last Updated On 31 October,2013 About 1 hour ago
Pakistani government has said that 3 percent of 2,227 people killed in drone strikes were civilians.

ISLAMABAD (AP) - The Pakistani government said Wednesday that 3 percent of 2,227 people killed in U.S. drone strikes since 2008 were civilians, a surprisingly low figure that sparked criticism from groups that have investigated death tolls from the attacks.
The number, which was provided by the Ministry of Defense to the Senate, is much lower than past government calculations and estimates by independent organizations that have gone as high as 300. The ministry said 317 drone strikes have killed 2,160 Islamic militants and 67 civilians since 2008.
The attacks, which mainly target suspected Islamic militants near the northwestern border with Afghanistan, are widely unpopular in Pakistan because they are viewed as violating the country s sovereignty and killing too many civilians. The Pakistani government regularly criticizes the drone program in public, even though it is known to have secretly supported at least some of the strikes in the past.
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif pressed President Barack Obama to end the attacks in a visit to the White House last week, but the U.S. considers the attacks vital to its battle against al-Qaida and the Taliban and gave no indication it was willing to abandon them.
Defense Ministry officials could not be reached for comment, and the statement posted on the Senate s website did not give any indication why the number was so much lower than past government calculations and outside estimates.

Responding to a question, the minister said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also raised the issue of release of Dr Aafya Siddiqui during his visit to the United States which was never raised by the previous governments.

Bigg Boss 7: Kushal Tandon and Gauhar Khan evicted from the house

In a surprise twist, Kushal Tandon and Gauhar Khan have been asked to pack their bags by Bigg Boss after the scuffle with VJ Andy. Kushal and Gauhar are the love birds in the Bigg Boss house.

Recently, Kushal had a nasty fight with Tanishaa, who pushed him not once but thrice. While a part of it was aired on the show, the part where a furious Kushal called Tanishaa a flop actress was not shown.
A source says, Kushal told Tanishaa that she is a dhabba on her family. “Look where your sister (Kajol) is and where you are today,” he is said to have taunted her.
He was so angry that he jumped the wall and escaped out of the house. It’s a different thing that he was brought back by the security personnel and directly nominated for elimination.

Also a few days ago, Bollywood star Salman Khan was so upset with Kushal's bad behaviour with actress Tanisha Mukherjee on the show that he said it would be his last season as a host of the reality show. The 47-year-old actor on Saturday gave an earful to Kushal for insulting Tanishaa.
"If you think you can clean your image, it's a misconception," Salman told Kushal, and added that he too had faced it and realised that one's mistakes are etched in people's memories.

"Because of this episode, this might be the last season for me," a livid Salman said on Saturday. On Sunday, Salman talked about the issue again on Twitter responding to queries from his followers. He wrote that according to Bigg Boss fans, both should have been out, "but there was a lot more than wat you saw".

Salman Khan explains his outburst on Bigg Boss 7

Salman Khan
Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has taken to Twitter to explain his outburst against 'Bigg Boss 7' contestant Kushal Tandon. Salman slammed Kushal for being rude to housemate Tanisha and his attempt to escape the reality show house over a fight during a task this weekend. But, many of Salman's fans believed that the actor was a bit "unfair" on Kushal by taking Tanisha's side. However, Salman, who had claimed that Kushal's action may force him to not return as Bigg Boss host next season, said his anger was genuine. "You see one hour, I see the whole deal. Guess some of you guys may not react when someone speaks to your family's female members or women in that manner. But I do and most of us men and women stand up against men who run them down," Salman tweeted. The 47-year-old actor said he decided to reply after seeing comments by 'Bigg Boss' followers. "I am only answering your question about Bigg Boss because you are following me. This is a game. It's on TV so I like to keep a check on it." He also explained why he did not say anything to Armaan or Andy for the fights they get into. "According to what you saw on TV, both should have been out but there was a lot more to the fight than what you saw. There can only be that much put on TV," he added. Many of Salman's followers said that the actor was 'unfair' to Kushal after his special 'Weekend Ka Wow' episode on Saturday. "What most disgusting is how Salman Khan entirely supports Tanisha and her ways and then talk about being fair. How so Mr Khan? UnfairSalman," a fan wrote "Ok, you are from a respected family, Tanisha. But UnfairSalman biased-ness is so not done! We love Kushal and Gauhar," fan Alok Trivedi tweeted.

Movie Review: 'Ishq Garaari' enthralls youngsters, desi crowds

Movie Review: `Ishq Garaari` enthralls youngsters, desi crowds
Friday, October 25, 2013 17:05 IST
By R.S.Taggar, Santa Banta News Network
Cast: Sharry Maan, Rannvijay Singh, Miss Pooja, Mandy Takhar, Gulzar Chahal, Vinaypal Buttar, Gunjan Walia and Prabhleen Sandhu

Direction: Dheeraj Rattan

Rating: **1/2

Ishq Garaari's story revolves around an 'unrecognised' writer and singer, Sherry Mann (Sherry Mann) who lives in a village and is eager to get his songs recorded. He is supported in his efforts by his girlfriend, who is the daughter of a rich transporter. He owns 10 Tempos (Bhoonds) but his more famous for his beautiful daughters. Sweety (Mandy Thakar) is obsessed with the Miss Pooja's fame and wants to become a singer like her. While the family wants her to get married and settle down.

The two aspiring singers Sherry Mann and Sweety, living in the same village are brought together by a weird plot in which Sweety is kidnapped by Sherry Mann and his comedian friend Boondi. During captivity, Sweety hears Sherry singing and writing and wants to know who is writing songs for him because she is also looking for a good lyricist for herself.

In parallel plot, Sweety's sister, flees from home as she doesn't to get married as per her family's wish and comes across Jassi Gill. However, the booty of Rs 70 lakh meant for kidnappers is mistakenly carried by her. Well known Punjabi singer Miss Pooja has a sort of double role. One as Sweety's imaginary sister, who guides her at all times, since Sweety suffers from hallucinations where she imagines that Miss Pooja, her ideal, is all along with her and talking to her.

The director and the story writer bring real Miss Pooja appear before the two aspiring singers which ends the hallucinations of Sweety. Sherry Mann and Sweety embrace each other, before the curtains fall.

The comedy is mainly situation and the absence of an established comedian is highly felt. The cinematography is at par with Bollywood movies and the characters do justice to their roles but the plot fails miserably. The choreography is alright and the songs were pretty good since they are sung by established singers in Sherry Maan, Miss Pooja and above all, by Yo Yo Honey Singh. The direction (according to the script) was pretty flawless.

If you are a teenager and love Punjabi cinema, go, run and watch Ishq Garaari released worldwide today. It will fascinate you. But the mature ones surely need to avoid if they love serious and meaningful cinema. The first show went house-full at the Piccadilly Mall in Chandigarh with uproarious youngsters dancing with the songs and music of the film.

Nokia Lumia 800: A Phone That Survived Over Three Months Underwater!

A fresh occurrence bolsters the belief on Nokia’s durableness and has risen my admiration up following one of these phones has been found in a lake after being lost for about three months – and “guess what?” It survived.
1378269 725135880838623 744501 n Nokia Lumia 800: A Phone That Survived Over Three Months Underwater!
Yes! You’ve heard it right, the story has recently gone viral on the Internet which came out from the Sweden’s Roger Nilsson, whose Nokia Lumia 800 went for a plunge a few months ago in a lake. The conditions of the loss were not instantly known, but it was evidently found more than three months later, stuck between a couple of rocks.
Roger posted this story on Nokia Sweden’s Facebook Page, stating that when he spotted his phone lodged between two rocks in the lake, it was covered with muck, shells and other waste. He cleaned it up, disassembled the whole handset and kept it on a radiator to dry, and charged it up.
He claimed that his phone works completely fine without any apparent issues, and the battery lasts for a couple of days as usual.
For the device which is not developed to survive in water, and is vulnerable to damage like any other regular smartphone in the market today is usually equals a death knell and If this story is true, then it’s quite an stirring achievement for a device that’s not even rated for underwater resistance.

Money matters are embarrassing for Ranbir Kapoor
Wednesday, October 30, 2013 11:51 IST
Actor Ranbir Kapoor, who was recently in news for charging Rs.20 crore for his latest film "Besharaam", says money is something which should not be discussed in public.

"Nothing disturbs me. It's the reporter's job to ask questions and it's my job to answer in the best way. Money is something which should not be discussed. It's personal and many people have their own takes," Ranbir Kapoor told.

"I read an article recently that I charged Rs.20 crore for my last film ('Besharam') and it's embarrassing sometimes. You don't want to talk about your finances. It's very personal," he added.

"Besharaam", which brought his actor-parents Neetu and Rishi Kapoor on the screen for the first time with him, performed poorly at the box office. But the actor says he will continue to work in the same way.

"I can only wait for my next release after every film. Whether it's a hit or a flop, I approach my film in the same way. I will continue to do so. How much a flop or a hit matters, I don't know. My parents have been acting for more than 30 years. They are happy that we worked together," he said.

Facebook gives Brazil's politicians social media tips ahead of Internet bill

facebook-laptop-635.jpg

As Brazil threatens to impose strict new regulations on American Internet companies, Facebook offered some of its top politicians free advice this week on how to win "friends" and maximize "likes" on their webpages.Facebook's tips on using social media came as politicians geared up for a 2014 general election and as Congress prepared to vote on legislation that could severely restrict the way companies like Facebook, Twitter and Google operate in Brazil.
After revelations of U.S. government spying on Brazilian citizens and companies, including President Dilma Rousseff, Brazil is rushing through legislation that would oblige Internet companies to store information about their Brazilian users in the country. The lower house of Congress votes on the measure next Wednesday.
Internet companies and technology experts say the demand would be costly and technically complicated.
With 76 million Facebook users, more than any other country outside the United States and possibly India, Brazil is a key market for the San Francisco-based social network. That also makes Facebook a powerful tool for Brazilian politicians Seeking to win new supporters.
"That's such a huge voting block of citizens who are getting a lot of their news and information from places like Facebook," said Katie Harbath, Facebook's global manager for politics and government engagement.
Harbath did not discuss Brazil's move to regulate Internet usage in her coaching sessions, but she conducted them with Bruno Magrani, the company's top lobbyist in Brasilia.
Harbath spent four days in capital instructing Brazilian lawmakers and staffers in packed congressional rooms on how to maximize the "likes" on their Facebook pages. She taught President Dilma Rousseff's online team how boost her social media presence.
Before joining Facebook, Harbath was a digital strategist for the Republican National Committee and the 2008 presidential campaign of former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
Some of Harbath's tips: don't post more than three times a day to avoid boring potential supporters; be as authentic and personal as possible; engage constituents in question-and-answer sessions, virtual town halls that are so popular with U.S. congressmen that they call them Facebook Fridays.
Above all, she advised, post content at the time of peak Facebook usage. Compared with the United States, where usage peaks between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., surveys show Facebook usage is heaviest in Brazil at lunchtime.
Harbath showed Brazilian politicians how to use Facebook metadata tools to learn how many users visit their pages and at what time of the day.
In a telephone interview, she declined to comment on the impact of Brazil's proposed Internet law.
Localizing data centers
Angered by reports that the U.S. National Security Agency monitored emails, phone calls and other communications of Brazilians with secret Internet surveillance programs, Rousseff's government wants to force foreign-based Internet companies to maintain data centers inside Brazil, subject to Brazilian privacy laws.
Internet companies operating in Brazil are currently free to put data centers wherever they like. Facebook Inc, for example, stores its global data in the United States and a new complex in Sweden.
Business lobbies have written to lawmakers warning that the in-country data storage requirements could exclude Brazilian Internet users from cloud data storage services, shut off Brazil from the seamless flow of global information and hinder its hopes of becoming a regional IT and data center hub.
One lawmaker who met with Harbath, former Rio de Janeiro Governor Antony Garotinho, said the requirement for local data centers must be dropped.
"I'm against it. How are you going to store in Brazil information on Brazilians that is part of a worldwide network? It's kind of hard and I think it's unlikely to happen."

Last Updated On 30 October,2013 About 16 minutes ago
US drone attacks could stop tomorrow if Pakistan stops facilitating it, Rep. Alan Grayson said.

Grayson was of the view that heirs of the innocent victims of drone attacks should receive compensation from the United States.

Bitter Celeb Fights out in the open

Bitter Celeb Fights out in the open
Wednesday, October 30, 2013 12:09 IST
Sushant Singh Rajput and Ankita Lokhande reportedly had a public spat recently. In the light of this episode, we bring you other celeb fights that happened in complete public view...

Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif
While speculations were running rife about their exact relationship status, Salman khan announced in an interview that he had broken up with Katrina Kaif, though they remained friends.

The press naturally flew a volley of questions on Katrina at a press conference. Completely unnerved by comments, she broke down and blurted `If Salman says we've split, it must be true`. After that, she walked out of the press conference.

Kangana Ranaut-Aditya Pancholi
Kangana Ranaut's and Aditya Pancholi's break-up was one big public tamasha. Apparently, their live-in relationship was short-lived with Kangana moving on to films and Pancholi unable to let go. Kangana was at a party when Aditya confronted her.

She made a hasty exit from the party and took an auto-rickshaw to escape from Aditya. In a dramatic move, he reportedly chased the auto-rickshaw, stopped it in the middle of the road and apparently physically abused her. The actress lodged a complaint and the matter was probed at length, all this at the cost of public humiliation.

Kareena Kapoor-Shahid Kapur
She turned into a vegetarian, started taking interest in his spiritual beliefs and even shared his reclusive habits. But apparently, he felt stifled. Though they largely kept their problems privy, there were instances of public spats.

Like the time when on an Koffee with Karan, host Karan Johar asked Shahid how he had felt about Kareena changing her lifestyle to suit his. The question apparently irked him and after the shoot, he is said to have given Kareena a earful in front of those present how her friends (Karan in this context) were constantly putting him down by asking such questions.

Salman Khan-Aishwarya Rai
When things started souring between them, Aishwaya had apparently confided as to how she was a victim of physical abuse. There were reports of public scenes. Like the time when Khan stormed on the sets of Chalte Chalte and a fight apparently broke out between them. The actress' parents also lodged a police complaint later it is said.

Zeenat Aman-Sanjay Khan
No one knows for sure what really transpired between the once alleged lovers Zeenat Aman and Sanjay Khan. But the relationship left her badly bruised and a permanent scar on her eye.

Drone-hit Pak family gives harrowing testimony to US Congress

Last Updated On 30 October,2013 About
Nabila Rehman asks US officials why his mother was killed and family members hurt in drone attack.

WASHINGTON (Web Desk) - A Pakistani family affected by US drone strikes, appeared before members of the US Congress on Tuesday to record their account from when they were targeted last year.
Rafiq ur Rehman – a primary (elementary) teacher in North Waziristan – and his children Zubair (13) and Nabila (9) are the first victims of the covert drone programme to give evidence in person to members of Congress. The children’s grandmother – Mr Rehman’s mother – Mammana Bibi (67) was killed in a CIA strike in October 2012.
The family was accompanied by Jennifer Gibson, an attorney with the human rights charity Reprieve.
Rehman’s son Zubair, 13, said that the “US drone took my grandmother’s life.”
Replying to a question Rehman said when his mother died in the drone strike, the neighbours “told me that see what US has done to your mother, you should hate US.”
“Our children now do not want to go to school, they even fear to play outside, we live in a constant fear. Before drone campaign started, we were busy in our own lives.”
In reply to a question raised by an Al Jazeera correspondent, Congressman Alan Grayson said that presence of five members of Congress at the briefing indicated that there is a fair amount of interest from representatives. He conceded that he does not see any formal briefing on drones soon as most of the house committees are chaired by the people who are friends of military industrial complex not those who oppose of it or are sceptical of it. “I believe that over the span of time it people will realise the gravity of this issue.”
The Congressmen present though defended the strikes on allegations that they ammounted to war crimes citing legal ussyes.
To a question on what would he say if he got the chance to meet President Obama, who approves the strikes Rehman said, “I would like to tell President Obama that what happened to me and my family is wrong”.
“I would urge him to find a peaceful answer to end this war. During my stay here in US I noticed that everyone here lives in peace here and I dream that my children also be able to live in peace.”
Rehman urged the US and Pakistan government to achieve peace.
Earlier, Nabila s father, Rafiq Rehman, said he accepted an invitation from a documentary production company to come to the United States because "as a teacher, I wanted to educate Americans and let them know my children have been injured."
"My daughter does not have the face of a terrorist and neither did my mother. It just doesn t make sense to me, why this happened," he told AFP in an interview.
The Rehmans said they have no connection to any anti-US extremists or Al-Qaeda militants, and as they mourned their grandmother, they were confounded by inaccurate accounts of the October 2012 bombing raid.
Media reports afterward confirmed a drone strike took place, but said missiles hit a house, with one version alleging a car was struck and several militants killed.
But the Rehmans said no building or car was directly hit in the attack, and that paved roads are some distance away. They say missiles landed in the field where their grandmother was teaching Nabila how to recognize when okra are ripe enough to pick.
After a loud boom, "where my grandmother was standing, I saw these two bright lights come down and hit her," said Nabila. "And everything became dark at that point."
She noticed blood on her hand and tried to wipe it away with her shawl. "But the blood just kept coming," she said.
Shrapnel lodged in her right hand and she was treated at a local hospital. Her brother, Zubair, suffered shrapnel wounds to his left leg, which required two operations. His family had to take out a loan to pay for the surgery.
Since the attack, Zubair said he has trouble sleeping and no longer goes outside to play cricket.
"I don t feel like going outside and playing with my friends. I don t feel like going to school. It s really destroyed my life," he said.
His sister said the US government s explanation for drone strikes did not apply to her family.
"When I hear that they are going after people who have done wrong to America, then what have I done wrong to them? What did my grandmother do wrong to them?
"I didn t do anything wrong," she said.
The Rehman family s experience features in a new documentary, "Unmanned: America s Drone Wars," which takes a critical view of the air strikes.

Tuesday, October 29, 2013 19:28 IST
Kushal's journey on 'Bigg Boss Saath 7' has seen many highs and lows. While he found a great friend and companion in Gauhar, he also irked many other housemates, which finally led to an unceremonious exit from the show

Last week, after Kushal accused Tanisha of pushing him and breaking the rules of the house, he willingly decided to leave the house because no action was taken against her aggression. However, last night (October 28) Kushal indulged in a similar act wherein he got aggressive with Andy, after the latter made personal comments about Gauahar.

Kushal hits Andy

Gauahar tries to intervene

According to the luxury budget task for the week, 'Ignore The Obvious', housemates were asked to ignore Andy while he indulged in various antics such as interference while talking, teasing, irritating, etc, to grab their attention.

During this task, Andy misbehaved with Gauhar by flaunting and passing crude remarks on her lingerie. As a result, Gauhar got very upset with Andy and after end of the task, conveyed to Andy that his means and methods were quite cheap and unacceptable.

Gauahar also related the incident to Kushal, which infuriated him. Unable to control his anger at Andy's behaviour, Kushal ran towards Andy and tried to hit him. While the other housemates tried to stop Kushal from causing Andy any physical harm, Kushal continued to abuse Andy endlessly. When the situation got out of hand, Bigg Boss asked all contestants to assemble in the living room and made the announcement that owing to Kushal's violent behaviour, he will have to immediately pack his bags and leave the Bigg Boss house.
